The old medina of Tetouan is a remarkable example of a fortified city on the Mediterranean coast, backed by a mountainous landscape of northern Morocco.  Its growth from the beginning of the 17th century continued until the end of the 18th century and is reflected in its fortifications, its architecture, synthesis of Moroccan and Andalusian cultures, and its urban fabric. In the 20th century. Tetouan became the capital of the Spanish protectorate from 1913 to 1956.

The medina of Tetouan is surrounded by a historical wall about 5 km in length and access is through seven gates: Bab Jiaf, Bab Romouz, Bab Saida, Bab Al Mkaber, Bab  Okla.

We start the walk from Hassan II Square, on which sits the former palace of the khalifat of Tetouan (Dar El Makhzen). This huge esplanade is the busiest in the city. The souks are just around: We take “Mechuar” Street and drive into the old medina. We wander with pleasure through the alleys and arcades, in a mysterious and mesmerizing atmosphere. Each street is dedicated to a particular artisanal or commercial activity: dinandiers, cabinet makers, nattiers, leather craftsmen or spice merchants.

We will take the time to discover the Mellah of Tetouan: this old Jewish quarter is home to several traditional shops. Walking through the narrow streets we will see beautiful facades, doors and windows decorated with colorful ceramics and elegant ironwork. Later on we will visit the craft school in Tetouan. Various trades including leather, wood, ceramics, fabric and wool.

Spanish colonial architecture in TetouanEnsanche is located on an area of around 30 hectares. This Spanich city was built during the colonial period on several phases: the first buildings were constructed, at the beginning in the Spanish colonial style. Influenced by Mudejar Islamic architecture. They were followed from the 1930s until the beginning of the 1940s by the creation of the second category of buildings with their Baroque art style, which  is a highly ornate and elaborate style of architecture and design that flourished in Europe in the 17th and first half of the 18th century. The building, which still majestically overlooks Al Jalae square, contains a magnificent statue, which testifies to the creativity of Spanish artists. In the heart of  Ensanche, we will admire those imposing balconies, windows and doors set with wrought iron. Everything reminds us of the colors of Andalusia. For photography lovers this is one of the best places for original photo shoots. Built on the peeled mountain, this area offers a beautiful panorama of the mountain and the foothills of the Rif.

This walking tour through the old medina and the Ensanche will not end before we visit the circular square Moulay el-Mehdi known by its old name “Placa Primo” and which is in the center of the Spanish city of Tetouan. We will enjoy the  engraving of impressions of the present  moment  and refeeling the history of  this square where Notre Dame de la Victoire cathedral built in 1919 is located. (The yellowish church is now closed).

Ensanche has other beautiful buildings. They  include the old Spanish Casino,  as well as the prestigious Teatro Español and the Sidi Frij clinic, which date respectively from 1916 and 1938.

Ensanche, has also the most beautiful park:  “El jardín de los enamorados”(Garden of lovers), better known to Tetouanies by “Ryad Al Ouchak” and which dates from 1929. This beautiful site was inaugurated for the first time under the name of Garden of the Consul Cajigas.

If time allows we will visit the archaeological museum which is a must-see: it contains all the secrets of northwestern Morocco from prehistory to the 17th century. The galleries devoted to Roman antiquity, the Phoenicians and the Punic civilization are particularly interesting.
